What's So Special About Eastern Market?
In Washington DC, every time the Market’s demise was planned by District government, neighborhood residents rose up to try and put a stop to it. Endless street protests, petitions, public hearings, and public outrage led to the preservation and continued operation of the Eastern Market as the place for which it was originally designed – as a fresh food and farmer’s Market.

As a Hill resident of many years, I cannot imagine life on the Hill without the high quality, fresh foods from Eastern Market and the personal relationships with the merchants. No grocery chain comes close to filling the Market's shoes.
I was born in D.C., as was my mother and grandmother. My great uncle was a butcher in Eastern Market and my mother (born 1900) remembers going there for lunch when my grandmother was not home. Eastern Market is a great contribution to the neighborhood, tourism which makes money for the city and anyone who believes in honoring our history.
We can't do it alone!
