New Report Details Mismanagement
at Historic Eastern Market on Capitol Hill

Eastern Market Preservation and Development Corporation will release a new report outlining persistent and longstanding management issues of the Historic Eastern Market on May 22nd.  Since 2009 the D.C. Department of General Services (DGS) has managed the market since the building reopened after a fire in 2007. The new report is a follow-up to the 2014 D.C. audit that found widespread mismanagement, and outdated leases for merchants and vendors at Eastern Market.

Eastern Market, in operation since 1873, is the District’s oldest public fresh food market and among the oldest in the United States. The Eastern Market building is a National Historic Landmark and is the “Heart of Capitol Hill”.

DGS manages the following spaces, merchants and vendors: The South Hall Market, Fresh Tuesdays Farmers Market, The Weekend Farmers’ Line, The Weekend Outdoor Market, and The North Hall.

WHAT: News conference to release a report, “DC’s Eastern Market: How to Save an Endangered Treasure”, regarding the mismanagement of Eastern Market and solutions.

WHEN: 11 a.m.  Tuesday, May 22nd

WHERE: Port City Java Plaza, 701 North Carolina Avenue, SE and 7th Street SE, Washington, DC  20003, across from Eastern Market

The recently revived Eastern Market Preservation and Development Corporation (DBA Eastern Market Preservation) urges the Capitol Hill community to help preserve the historic nature of Eastern Market to continue its viability as a high quality, diverse, locally-owned fresh food market in the heart of Capitol Hill.

The Eastern Market Preservation group of concerned residents will provide expert and independent technical, and financial review of Eastern Market management.  It will raise the awareness of decision-makers, the media, and residents about the Market’s threatened survival. The group is prepared to take legal action, if necessary, to ensure that the laws and regulations related to The Eastern Market Act are followed and implemented so that Eastern Market’s future is secure.
